Discovery and Excavation
In 2013, Naturalis experts came across the location in which these fossils were unearthed, located in Wyoming, USA. The excavation was multi expedition and a collaborative effort involving paleontologists and volunteers from Naturalis and international experts. This process involved detailed mapping, digging and carefull transport.
Before Ex Situ Labs was founded, we and many others from Naturalis, were responsible for the realisation of this huge project
Colijn is the 3D reconstruction specialist for the post cranial skeleton of all five individuals. It took more than 2 years for all of the 3D work to be finished. During this time, fossils where still being cleaned by preparators such as Erwin, Pasha and Ydnas. The fossils were simultaniously being sampled for research.
Working closely with us at Naturalis, Javid Jooshesh was responsible for the reconstruction of the individual's skulls, which we then also 3D printed and united with the real fossilized material.
